Greetings beloved,
Today, let’s reflect on the enduring authority of the scriptures entrusted to us:
And we have as more sure the prophetic word, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.
2 Peter 1:19
This passage follows Peter’s account of witnessing the transfiguration of Jesus Christ alongside John and Andrew. Despite their firsthand experience, Peter emphasizes the surpassing certainty of the prophetic word found in the scriptures. He urges believers not to rely solely on personal experiences but to diligently heed the scriptures until the return of Christ.
Here are practical considerations:
- The scriptures’ authority over personal experiences: When our experiences conflict with scripture, we must prioritize God’s word.
- Obedience to scripture: Recognize the scriptures as God’s authoritative word and diligently heed them.
- Illumination through scripture: The scriptures, likened to a guiding lamp in darkness, lead us and impart wisdom for salvation and righteous living. As 2 Timothy 3:15 states, they “make us wise unto salvation,” and 2 Timothy 3:16 emphasizes their profitability for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness.
Let’s honor the scriptures and commit to meditating on them continually.
Blessings
