For the LORD God is a sun and shield;
The LORD will give grace and glory;
No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.
O LORD of hosts,
Blessed is the man who trusts in You.
— Psalm 84:11–12
The psalmist outlines both what God gives and what He does not withhold.
He tells us that God gives grace. Grace is unmerited favor—a goodness shown to those who do not deserve it. When we look honestly at ourselves, this is exactly what we see. As human beings, we have fallen short of the glory of God. We have not sought after Him. We have been clothed in the filthy garments of sin and iniquity. Therefore, we should not expect any good thing on the basis of our own merit.
The only hope we have for any good in our lives is entirely on account of grace. And this is precisely what the Lord promises.
The psalmist also says that God is a sun and a shield. As the sun, He gives both light and warmth. He is the source of life. He not only created all things, but He also sustains them.
As a shield, He is our protector. He guards us against every form of evil—every enemy, whether small or great, visible or unseen, wicked or cunning. Our Almighty Savior is our all-sufficient protector, and He is the only one we truly need.
This is the grace we receive from God. We do not deserve the life and protection He gives, yet He gives them freely.
Furthermore, the psalmist declares that God gives glory. This word carries the idea of weightiness—a sense of value, importance, purpose, and meaning. Elsewhere, Scripture reminds us that man is like dust, like a mist that appears for a moment and then vanishes. Yet in God, we are given glory. Our lives are filled with meaning, purpose, and eternal significance.
The world constantly urges us to search for purpose and meaning. But if we detach ourselves from the true Vine—the Lord Jesus Christ—we will never find them. When we separate ourselves from the source of life, we lose the very foundation of purpose.
Thus, the psalmist finds great comfort in this truth: the Lord gives both grace and glory.
The psalm also emphasizes what God does not withhold. He does not withhold any good thing from those who walk uprightly.
This upright walk is a life of integrity—a life lived in accordance with God’s commands. Yet, left to ourselves, we cannot attain this level of integrity. The only way to walk uprightly is to yield ourselves to the Lord Jesus Christ, who alone lived in perfect righteousness.
When we come to Christ by faith, the Holy Spirit applies His finished work to us—His sinless life, His sacrificial death, His resurrection on the third day, and His ascension to the right hand of the Father. Through this, we are united with Christ. We are given a new identity as children of God. We are clothed in His righteousness, so that when God looks upon us, He sees the perfect integrity of Christ.
Because of this, it pleases our Father not to withhold any good thing from us.
He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?
— Romans 8:32
Because we are in Christ, we are counted as walking in integrity. And because of this, we can trust that God will provide for us.
And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
— Philippians 4:19
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,
— Ephesians 3:20
The closing verse of this psalm reminds us of the blessing that belongs to those who trust in the Lord. This is where faith comes in. All that God is, all that He gives, and all that He promises not to withhold are received by faith.
May we learn to rest in the finished work of Jesus Christ, and in doing so, truly enjoy our Lord—our sun and shield, the One who gives grace and glory, and who withholds no good thing from His people.
Grace and peace.
