Greetings friends,
Today, let’s explore a section of Psalm 91:
Because he has loved Me, therefore I will protect him;I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name.
Psalm 91:14
By the time the psalmist has called God his refuge and fortress, he has come to be assured that despite what goes on around him in the world, God will protect him.
A thousand may fall at your side And ten thousand at your right hand,But it shall not approach you.
Psalm 91:7
The reassurances that come from God to the psalmist are a good place to observe the expectations that he has for us.God says he will protect the psalmist because the psalmist has come to love God. The expression of this love to God is furthermore described by how the psalmist has come to know God’s name.
These are quite fascinating phrases to explore:
1. Loving God
It is important to note that the love described here is not a mere rise and fall of emotional excitement; rather, it’s a deep, sober desire for God. One commentator writes, “The word for ‘love’ means a ‘deep longing’ for God, or a ‘clinging’ to God.”
2. God’s protection
God promises to protect those who love Him. Scripture teaches that this kind of protection assures the believer that God is always there, working all things for the good of those who love Him.
And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.
Romans 8:28
This protection from God means that regardless of what the believer goes through in life, they are to always know that “because they have a true longing for God and because they are clinging on to God, God will always be there to protect them.”
Furthermore, the believer should always remember that it is through the power of God that they come to love God and are able to cling on to Him.
So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
Philippians 2:12-13
3. Knowing God
“Knowing” in the scriptures is at times used as an intimate word (Genesis 4:1, Romans 8:29). This “knowing” is not simply having an awareness or surface-level knowledge about something or someone, but rather a deep, intimate knowledge.
God says believers who have come to love him are ones who have come to know His name. Such are ones who are constantly looking to get into a deeper, more intimate relationship with God. They are the ones who always “draw near to God” — James 4:8, they are the ones who “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” — Matthew 6:33.
This can be done by a consistent prayer life, a lifestyle of reading and meditating on the word of God and living out the truths in the word.I pray we can be a people that recognizes our dire need for our savior daily and continue to seek to know and love our Lord every single day of our lives.
Blessings, Paul.
