Greetings, beloved of God,
Today, let’s reflect on the psalmist’s profound request for God’s illumination of the scriptures:
Open my eyes, that I may behold Wonderful things from Your law.
Psalm 119:18
Before seeking God’s illuminating power, the psalmist acknowledges that the only way to stay on the right path is by obeying the Word of God:
How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word.”
Psalm 119:9
The psalmist understands that purity is maintained by submitting to the guidance of the Word of God. He then petitions God to open his eyes, acknowledging his own spiritual blindness due to his fallen nature. He recognizes his inability to comprehend the scriptures without divine intervention and turns to God for illumination.
The purpose of this illumination, as revealed by the psalmist, is to comprehend the wonderful aspects of God’s law. The term “your law” refers to the revelations God has provided thus far.
The psalmist acknowledges that salvation lies in the revelations given by the Lord, calling them wondrous.
Jesus later echoes this sentiment in the Gospels as He speaks to His disciples:
Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and He said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day.’
Luke 24:45-46
Here are some points to consider:
- Our need for illumination: Have we recognized that without the Holy Spirit’s enablement, we cannot fully comprehend God’s word?
- The desire for God’s word: Do we yearn to discover the wondrous aspects of the Word of God?
- The wonder of God’s word: Do we share the psalmist’s perspective that the Word of God is indeed wonderful?
I pray that this word will encourages you to earnestly seek to know God’s word.
Blessings,Paul
