Hello brothers and sisters in Christ,
Today, let’s glance at a statement made by the author of Hebrews regarding the dangers of not paying attention to the word handed down to us:
For this reason, we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away.”
Hebrews 2:1
The author begins by stating “for this reason,” referring to something mentioned at the outset of the letter:
“God, having spoken long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days spoke to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds.”
Hebrews 1:1-2
Essentially, the author is emphasizing the importance of paying attention to God’s word, as conveyed through the prophets in the past and now through His Son, Jesus Christ.
Additionally, the phrase “for this reason” links to God elevating Christ above the angels.
But to which of the angels has He ever said, ‘Sit at My right hand, Until I put Your enemies As a footstool for Your feet’?”
Hebrews 1:13
In essence, since God is speaking to us through His Son, whom He has exalted above all, it is imperative to heed what God communicates through Jesus.
The author of Hebrews then insists that “we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard.” The use of “MUST” conveys a sense of urgency and severity, indicating it’s not merely a suggestion but a command with grave consequences for disobedience. This urgency is akin to Jesus’s admonition to Nicodemus regarding salvation: “You MUST be born again.” — John 3:7
This command highlights the serious consequences of neglecting God’s word, as failing to heed it can result in drifting away or slipping into disobedience. The Greek word for “drift away” is “pararreō,” which also means “to slip by” or “to flow by.” One commentator writes of this: “Superficial hearers lose the benefit of the word preached”. This underscores the danger of superficially hearing the word but failing to internalize its truth, as warned by Jesus in Matthew 7:26-27:
“Everyone hearing these words of Mine and not doing them may be compared to a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain descended, and the rivers came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.”
Matthew 7:26-27
James echoes this sentiment, urging believers to be doers of the word, not just hearers:
But become doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.”
James 1:22
Key takeaways:
- God has spoken through His Son: We must closely heed Jesus’s teachings, including His sinless life, sacrificial death, and resurrection, which are central to our salvation.
- We must act upon the Word: It’s our responsibility to not only listen but also to obey God’s word diligently.
- Disobedience entails danger: Neglecting God’s word can lead to severe consequences, including missing out on the liberating truths it offers.
Let’s all strive to pay closer attention to God’s word.
With love, Paul.
