Be Quiet!

⏱️ 3 minutes.

Hello dear brothers and sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ,

Today, let’s witness the authority of Jesus in action as He rebukes the unclean spirits:

And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!”
— Mark 1:25

In the previous verse, we see the devil’s perspective on who Jesus Christ was. Interestingly, the demon actually had a very accurate understanding of who Jesus was. However, it is important to note that at this particular time, it was not yet the appointed time for Jesus to be fully revealed to the people. This is why Jesus’s first response is to silence the unclean spirits.

The statement Jesus uses is one of absolute authority: “Be quiet.” This is a command given from one with greater authority to one with lesser authority. It is clear that Jesus has complete authority over the unclean spirits.

In addition to demanding silence, Jesus also commands the spirit to come out of the man. Notice the unclean spirit’s response—there is no rebellion or negotiation. This demonstrates that Jesus’s authority over the unclean spirits is absolute. Once Jesus speaks, there is no room for negotiation. These spirits have no power to challenge Christ’s authority. This authority is further emphasized in the next verse:

And throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him.
— Mark 1:26

Jesus commanded the spirit to be quiet and to come out of the man, and that is exactly what happened. The convulsions can be seen as the unclean spirit’s final, futile attempt to assert its weak authority. Additionally, the loud cry of the spirit as it departs highlights the agony and defeat it experiences under Jesus’s command.

This entire scenario reminds us of the absolute authority that Jesus has over all creation, including unclean spirits. In the book of Revelation, we see how this same authority will ultimately be exercised in the final punishment of the devil:

And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
— Revelation 20:10

The devil, the unclean spirits, and all false prophets are engaged in a battle they are destined to lose. The Bible teaches us that, ultimately, their defeat is certain. This is reflected in God’s attitude as the devil and his followers gather in vain against the armies of heaven:

Why do the nations rage
And the peoples meditate on a vain thing?
The kings of the earth take their stand
And the rulers take counsel together
Against Yahweh and against His Anointed, saying,
“Let us tear their fetters apart
And cast away their cords from us!”

He who sits in the heavens laughs,
The Lord mocks them.
— Psalm 2:1-4

Let us be reminded that we serve a Lord and High Priest who is above all the fallen creatures of hell. Our Lord’s authority extends over every created thing.

As believers, let us remember to give Him the praise, honor, and reverence He is due. Also, let us find comfort in the fact that our Lord is King above all kings.

Be blessed.
