Came To Preach

⏱️ 4 minutes.

Hello, friends loved by our Lord,

Today, let’s reflect on Jesus’ preaching ministry:

“Simon and his companions searched for Him, and they found Him, and said to Him, ‘Everyone is looking for You.’”
— Mark 1:36-37

After Jesus withdrew to pray, Simon and his companions set out to find Him. This makes sense, as Jesus had left early, before sunrise, and gone to a solitary place—somewhere He wouldn’t have been easily seen. Mark tells us that Simon was with his companions. From earlier verses, we can infer that these companions may have included his brother Andrew, as well as James and John, the sons of Zebedee.

When they found Jesus, they said, “Everyone is looking for You.” After Jesus’ ministry of healing and casting out demons, many people had gathered around Simon’s house in Capernaum, hoping to be healed. They assumed that this would be an ongoing ministry and that Jesus would continue operating from Simon’s home.

This attention must have excited the disciples, as they were finally in the spotlight. However, Jesus’ ministry of healing and miracles wasn’t simply about performing signs and wonders—it was to validate that He was sent from God. By this point, the signs He performed in Capernaum had clearly established that validation. In Jesus’ response, we see that He was ready to move on, rather than stay in one place, doing the same things:

“And He said to them, ‘Let us go elsewhere, to the towns nearby, so that I may preach there also; for that is what I came out for.’”
— Mark 1:38

Jesus told His disciples that they needed to move to the nearby towns. He added that the reason He wanted to go there was to preach as well. In this, we see that Jesus was a man on a mission—clear about His priorities and His purpose. There was no place He visited by accident; every location aligned with His purpose and plan.

Jesus emphasized that His purpose for going to these nearby towns was to continue preaching. This underscores the core of His mission—the proclamation of the Good News. From the very beginning of His ministry, He consistently declared God’s Word, as seen in one of His earliest sermons:

“From that time, Jesus began to preach and say, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’”
— Matthew 4:17

It’s clear that Jesus’ focus was on His mission on earth. As believers, we should learn from His example and understand the importance of focusing on our divine mission:

“So then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as God is pleading through us. We beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:20

This is our divine calling. Paul makes it clear that if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation and, therefore, ambassadors for Christ. The mission Paul highlights here is the very same one that Jesus emphasized during His ministry: urging people to be reconciled to God.

Jesus’ next statement adds even more weight to this message: “For that is what I came out for.” This phrase reveals the central purpose of Jesus’ coming. Often, when we think of Jesus’ ministry, we focus directly on His crucifixion. However, as R.C. Sproul pointed out, if the cross was the only reason for Jesus’ coming, there would have been no need for His virgin birth and sinless life. But that’s not the case. Jesus’ 33 years on earth had significance. Here, from His own mouth, we hear that His focus was to preach the Good News.

As believers, we must take our cue from our Lord and remember that we, too, have a heavenly mandate to share the Good News with those around us. We aren’t placed where we are just to pass the time; our purpose is to represent the kingdom of God. Our mandate is to go:

“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
— Matthew 28:19-20

Our Lord Jesus Christ was clear about His mission to go out and preach, saying that it was the very reason He came. I pray that this word reminds us never to forget our heavenly mandate.

And He went, preaching in their synagogues throughout all Galilee and casting out the demons.

— Mark 1:39

May the love of God be with you all.
