Greetings people of God,
Today let’s take a moment to learn about the doctrine of justification by faith.
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
Romans 5:1
The term “justified” (dikaioō) is pivotal in Paul’s writings, occurring over 24 times in the 13 letters that he writes in the New Testament. The word means “to deem right”, “to do one justice” or “to pass judgement”, “to show to be righteous”. It is a legal term.
Before Romans 5, Paul establishes humanity’s universal sinfulness and the consequential separation from God. _”For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” — Romans 3:23_. Thus, we stand condemned and estranged from God due to sin, for _”the wages of sin is death…” — Romans 6:23_.
However, Christ’s sacrificial death, having lived a sinless life to satisfy the requirements of God’s law, reconciles us, shifting our legal standing from condemnation to peace with God through faith in Christ.
To be justified, we must trust in Christ alone. This faith stems from acknowledging Jesus’ sinless life, sacrificial death, and resurrection, as they secure our justification.
Here are some key to takeaways:
- Without faith, we remain estranged from God, being His enemies due to sin.
- Justification hinges solely on faith in Jesus Christ, He is the only way. ” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through Me.” — John 14:6
- This faith comes by believing the truths that Jesus lived a sinless life that he died a sinner’s death in our place and that he was resurrected by God. “He who was delivered over on account of our transgressions, and was raised on account of our justification” — Romans 4:25
Let’s rejoice in this doctrine, finding peace with God and urging others to embrace it by sharing the Gospel of Christ.
In grace, Paul
