The Unpardonable Sin

⏱️ 5 minutes.

Hello chosen ones of God,

Today, let’s take a look at the unforgivable sin:

“But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness but is guilty of an eternal sin.”
— Mark 3:29

This verse follows immediately after the scribes accused Jesus of casting out unclean spirits by the power of Satan. Jesus pushed back against them for not believing that His works were divine, pointing out that Satan would not undermine his own work by leading people to the true and living God.

Here, we see Jesus indicting the scribes by warning them of an unpardonable sin. Jesus states that the sin which cannot be forgiven is the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.

The word blaspheme here means “to speak lightly or profanely of sacred things, especially to speak impiously of God.”

Jesus tells the scribes that their actions—speaking ill of the works of the Holy Spirit—are this blasphemy. The miracles of healing and casting out demons that Christ performed were done through the Spirit of God. In a parallel passage, we see this emphasized in more detail:

“And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him, but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him.”
— Luke 12:10

In this passage from Luke, Jesus clarifies that even speaking ill of Himself is a forgivable sin. However, rejecting the works done by the power of the Holy Spirit is the sin that cannot be forgiven. Matthew Henry comments on this to help us understand more:

“It is true the gospel promises, because Christ has purchased, forgiveness for the greatest sins and sinners; but by this sin, they would oppose the gifts of the Holy Ghost after Christ’s ascension. Such is the enmity of the heart, that unconverted men pretend believers are doing Satan’s work, when sinners are brought to repentance and newness of life.”
— Matthew Henry

It is indeed a sad truth that the sin for which all unbelievers will be condemned is the sin of unbelief. When we believe in Jesus Christ as Lord, this faith becomes the gateway to forgiveness for all our sins. Jesus Christ Himself becomes our advocate, interceding on our behalf before the Father:

“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.”
— 1 John 2:1-2

When the sin of unbelief is forgiven, it opens the door to the forgiveness of all other sins, because we have laid our burdens at the feet of Christ, the perfect substitute for our sins. By believing in Jesus Christ, we are credited with His righteousness, and all our sins are placed upon Him. This is known as substitutionary atonement.

Unbelievers, however, do not receive this grace. They still must answer for their sins before God. As Paul says:

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
— Romans 6:23

The author of Hebrews also offers a stern warning about not believing in Christ, despite witnessing the power of the Holy Spirit:

“How much worse punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has regarded as defiled the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?”
— Hebrews 10:29

The author of Hebrews describes this sin of blasphemy as an insult to the Spirit of grace. Not believing in Christ is, in essence, an insult to the Spirit of God. This was the case with the scribes, who called the Holy Spirit in Jesus an unclean spirit:

“Because they were saying, ‘He has an unclean spirit.’”
— Mark 3:30

This is the primary sin that condemns people to hell—the sin of unbelief. It is rejecting all that God has revealed about Himself, despite all the evidence He has provided. Paul tells the Romans that no one has an excuse, as God’s existence has been made clear:

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, both His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.”
— Romans 1:18-20

As one commentator notes, people don’t go to hell because of sin alone, but because of unforgiven sin. Although all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, those who repent and place their faith in Jesus Christ receive forgiveness. Those who don’t believe will bear the full weight of their sins and will be judged by the law of God.

I pray that this word helps us see the grace extended to us and stirs our hearts to reach out to those who are still rejecting Jesus, knowing the grave warning about the sin of blaspheming the Holy Spirit through unbelief.

May grace and mercy be upon you.
